Signs and Symptoms of TMJ
Symptoms of a TMJ disorder may include the following:
- Difficulty or discomfort while biting or chewing
- Headache (e.g., migraine)
- Inability to open or close the mouth completely
- Pain or tenderness around the jaw, in or around the ear, or elsewhere on the face
- Popping or clicking sound when opening or closing the mouth
- Uneven bite
Anyone who experiences TMJ symptoms should speak with a doctor or dentist to determine the cause for the disorder and develop a treatment plan to help prevent complications. If left untreated, temporomandibular joint disorders can cause complications, such as chronic pain (e.g., facial pain, migraine headaches).
