TMJ Prognosis
Most cases of TMJ can be treated successfully. The outlook for people with temporomandibular joint disorders usually depends on the cause and severity of the condition and how well treatment recommendations are followed.
Symptoms of TMJ usually are not long lasting. In many cases, symptoms resolve with little or no treatment. TMJ symptoms can sometimes return (recur).
TMJ Prevention
The following recommendations may help prevent temporomandibular joint disorders or may help prevent a recurrence of TMJ symptoms:
- Avoid excessive gum chewing.
- Avoid biting pencils, pen caps, fingernails, and cuticles.
- Avoid foods that are difficult to chew.
- Learn relaxation techniques to reduce muscle tension and stress and improve sleep.
- Maintain proper posture and learn about ergonomics.
- Change positions regularly throughout the day and stretch periodically to relieve repetitive stress on the body.
TMJ Research
Much remains to be studied in regard to TMJ disorders. Hopefully, new research will shed light on the effectiveness of current treatments and also lead to the development of new TMJ treatments (e.g., biofeedback, medications, arthroscopy, arthroplasty) and medical devices.
